Friendships in High School

Throughout high school, many people are going to cross your path - some that you connect with and others that you don’t. Friends are going to unfortunately come and go and while this can be frustrating, that’s the reality. Personally, I am a big believer in 'everything happens for a reason.' Although it may take many to understand, it seems to reflect whatever situation that you are going through at a present time. Remember to always be the bigger person, to hold your tongue and to smile and wave. People are going to remember YOU for being the girl or boy who decided to smile at them one day or hold open the door. While these are little things, they can make an MASSIVE impact to someone's day.

Following onto the concept of friendship, make sure you surround yourself with people that make you happy. Find friends who are kind, considerate and passionate about the friendship that they have with you. Don’t ever let anyone treat you as a second option. Be loyal, kind and funny and try to see the bright side in every situation that you experience with your friends. Unfortunately, the reality of life is that friendships can break down. And sometimes it happens naturally and that’s okay. You have to understand and accept that people change and they have every right to be who they are. It is also okay for you to be confused and a little upset about this. It is also okay to be disappointed that a person turned into someone they never said they would be. It is hard to realise that something that held a special place in your heart is breaking in front of your eyes. But, if someone is deliberately trying to hurt you in any way, that is not acceptable. From personal experiences, it can be hard to register that you have a voice and an opinion and you have every right to voice it - while being calm and collected about the situation that is unfolding.

Gossiping and rumours are old. I believe it is time to empower each other and stand for people that make you ,YOU. It's time to make up for the mistakes, try your hardest and be who you are. People should love you for YOU!

“We all make mistakes, have struggles, and even regret things in our past. But you are not your mistakes, you are not your struggles, and you are here NOW with the power to shape your day and your future.”

Grade 8 highlights 2016

Throughout grade eight, we enjoyed some spectacular times as a cohort. Last year we  learnt to develop and evolve our independence and sense of Brigidine through a variety of learning experiences and challenges. These experiences assisted us in becoming a coherent whole, allowing us to grow closer and learn the values of expression and friendship as well as identifying our own presence of mind and personality in everything we do. Over the course of the year, we enjoyed many experiences that left us smiling. Some of these include:
Shake & Stir – A theatre group that helped to ease the understanding of Shakespeare, performing a modernized version of A Midsummer Night’s dream.
Grade eight Retreat – High resolves and the Butterfly effect helped us to understand the importance of self-love and social justice.
Medieval Europe incursion – Where we learnt about how people in 5th – 15th century lived their day to day lives.

These experiences helped us to grow as young women and truly understand the importance of learning, self-love and social justice. We will definitely take these lessons and use them in our future years at Brigidine.

Makeup Tips and Ideas

Makeup Tips and Ideas

Makeup is a great outlet for anyone to express themselves or feel a bit more confident. A few of us are coming together to give you some tips and tricks we have learnt!

YouTube - a great place for anyone who likes to visually watch how AWESOME people apply their makeup, products they recommend or some tips and tricks.

Catalogues - any Priceline or chemist magazine would usually have some ideas or recommended products for you to test out. Also, they would most likely be good quality and have different ranges for different skin types.

Read Up - just browse Pinterest or Instagram and see what you can find! Social Media is a great way to find sneaky ideas or tricks. They are often quite helpful and detailed too. Another place to check out is just going to any supplier and see what there is to offer and anything you might be interested in.

Tips
  • Makeup is about you. You're the one wearing it. You're the one applying it. You're maybe the one buying it. As long as you feel good, that's all that matters.
  • Test different brands, find what works for you.
  • Know your skin type. Don't waste money on products that won't sit well or work well for you.
  • When applying, try to remember to face a window so that you have natural lighting facing you. This will allow you to see what other people see.
  • Experiment. Have fun with it!

Tricks
  • A popular tool is the 'Beauty Blender' it is a small tear drop shaped sponge used to blend your makeup. They do work and are super cheap!

You don't need all the high end brands like MAC, NARS or Urban Decay. Just literally go to Kmart and whatever appeals to you, go for it! Whatever works for your skin type is what you should stick by.

Something fun you could do is hit up Myer or David Jones and ask the workers to show you some products they think would work for you, this is free and you could maybe take a couple friends all get some samples. Who's better than a trained makeup enthusiast?

Start with the basics
  • Don’t go out spend heaps of money on makeup if you don’t wear it all the time. Try to start with cheaper brands. One that I would recommend is 'elf'. They are a good quality brand for super cheap prices. I mean the highlighter is only $6.00!

Ask around
  • We all have somebody in our life who wears makeup. That might be mum, or your sister or even your brother! Who knows. Just see if they can give you tips and tricks that they might use. You may not even find it helpful but it is important to have a second opinion.

Set up a makeup space
  • It may be a good idea to set up an area where you can hold all your makeup and do it. I recommend doing it near natural light because it always looks different outside to inside. You don't want to find that the hard way that the colour of your face doesn’t match your neck!
  • Buying some little containers or draw to hold some makeup in is going to keep it all neat as it has somewhere to go rather than just all over the floor. You can get cheap makeup storage at places like target!
  • Don’t do it on the carpet! Makeup is super hard to get out of the carpet and your parents will not be happy! (found that one out the hard way)
  • Make our makeup space fun! Put around some fairy lights, decorate it with stickers, or whatever will make you excited to do your makeup. It is meant to be fun so try consider that when decorating!

More than just makeup!

  • Applying products before and after you do your makeup will prevent the skin from getting damaged or dried out and will keep the makeup on for longer
  • Before applying makeup, make sure you go in with a face moisturizer and primer. The moisturiser stops your skin from drying out and the primer acts as another layer between the skin and the foundation; this way the fountain won't sink into your pores and make you break out! 'It's a crime not to prime!'
  • After you apply your makeup, cover your face with a setting spray. This will keep your makeup lasting longer and prevents your face from looking dry! If you don't have a setting spray, hairspray work well too! (especially for concerts)

Introductions to ourselves!

Rashmi
Hiii. My name is Rashmi or you can call me Sushi and yes, my nickname is named after a Japanese food . I was born here but both of my parents are Sri Lankan (GO LANKA!). I am a VERY low-key Buddhist.  I have black hair and super dark brown eyes (it reflects the darkness with my soul *dramatic pose*), I love to listen to music and I'm open to new genres even if it's heavy Metal (unless if it's Rap).  I love to read, even though it takes me a while. I LOVE TEA. And rice, curry and springrolls. I enjoy Maths, Science and I do both French and Japanese. I can speak Sinhalese and I know three words in Tamil (still counts as something right?). I love to watch Grey's Anatomy and Falling Skies. I'm very sociable so getting to know me will be easy. I hate tomatoes though unless if it's on pizza or any other foods. I LOVE FOOD and I dislike P.E. I hope everyone enjoys this year! All the best of luck, Sushi 😆

This year I have been asked to be a part of the Middle School Blog and to say the least – I’M SO EXCITED! I would love to cover social justice issues that occur within and out of our school and empower women of all ages; especially the girls within Brigidine College. You’ll usually see me cover varying topics from awesome books that you should read to more serious topics.  I am so excited for this year and I hope everyone has a great time reading our blog posts!

Lucy

Hello Everyone!
My name is Lucy and I am in grade 9 in De Porres house. A little bit about myself, I am a reader and love to bake, my favourite movie has got to be ‘Love, Rosie’ and my favourite Tv show (although old) is Full House. Skye
Hey Everyone!
My name is Skye Nugent and I am year 9 student in Foley (the best house). I am so excited to share some amazing ideas with you all and I hope that you are able to appreciate the work that will be put into this blog; we are all new to this process, so we'll have to ask you to be patient and bear with us! I am an enormous bookworm and I LOVE to write, whether it's creative stories, blogs or about something that moves me, I am always someone to have a pen and notebook in my hand :) My favourite books are The Book Thief and If This is A Woman, or anything historically based, which proceeds onto my love of English and Social Science; I am extremely passionate about finding out about the past and how it affects our future. Throughout this blog, I will hopefully be writing about the social aspects of our community and how we are influenced by the behaviour of others; I think that it is REALLY important that we shape ourselves to be the best people we can be. I want Brigidine College to become a comfortable space for empowerment, respect and love, and by showing strength from every girl in our school, I am confident that we will be able to achieve this as the year progresses. I am so enthusiastic about showcasing the power and impact of women, and by having an opportunity such as the Middle School Blog to share this eagerness, we will be able to spread this message easily throughout Brigidine. I am looking forward to where this year takes every single one of us!

As you can see, there are a lot of year 9 girls who are very passionate about the Middle School Blog and what potential it holds! We are very excited to share this year's experiences with you through the blog!
