Electives: Home Ec

Last week the home economics year 9 students decorated sponge cakes. It wasn’t an assignment, just a fun, learning activity. In week 8 we made the sponge cake and we put it in the freezer until week 9 when we decorated the cakes. The recipe for the sponge cake is below;

Sponge Cake
Ingredients:
  • 4 eggs
  • 3/4 cup caster sugar
  • 3/4 cup self-rising flour
  • 1/3 cup cornflour
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

Method:
  1. Preheat oven to 180. Grease and line cake tin.
  2. Separate eggs, sift flours and raising agents together 3 times.
  3. Beat egg whites to stiff peaks, slowly beat in sugar.
  4. Fold in yolks, then flour and raising agents.
  5. Pour into lined tray and bake for approximately 20 minutes, or until the sponge springs back when lightly touched.

We decorated the cakes however we wanted. It was a really fun activity that everyone enjoyed. Some photos of the finished cakes:

YouTubers You Should Have A Look At

So I love YouTube and many YouTubers and it is a great use of time on the holidays. So I have created this compilation of the best YouTubers for each category. This is obviously my pretty biased opinion so I do encourage you to keep searching YouTube for the YouTubers you love. If you think of any I've forgotten just comment them and I'll add them. Disclaimer: Not all of these are exactly appropriate for school so warning.

Enterprise Term Summary

Hi Everyone,
This semester we have learnt a lot in Enterprise. We have been busy with our Mother's Day Stalls, Mobile Phones Assignment and a Moving Out of Home task.

Mother's Day:
This term year 9 enterprise did the mother's day stalls. This involved picking our products, packaging them, making a business name, slogan and logo, making signs and selling the goods on the day. It was a really fun activity and was not assessed. Every team made more money than we spent too, which was good. Overall, it was a really exciting activity that everyone enjoyed. We learnt so much about what it's really like to run a business.

Mobile Phones Assignment:
This term our assignment was to write a report about which mobile phone, plan and contract we would best recommend for a business. This task was educational and challenging. We had to collect information and conduct comparisons, both positive and negative between the two phones. We scaffolded a report which compared the two phones and gave a final recommendation. We discusses what the business would use the phones for and what features would enable work life to be quick and efficient. Overall, this task enabled a further understanding about businesses, mobile phones and collecting and comparing information.

Moving Out of Home:
We had to move out of home for a fun in-class activity. This involved finding a house to live in, planning transport to and from work, planning meals for one week and shopping for the food and things that we needed. We then had to make a budget, and ensure that we didn’t spend more than we earnt. We did this all in partners. Each person earnt $1050 a week and my partner and I, after budgeting everything that we spent, still had $100 leftover. It was a really fun activity that everyone enjoyed.

This term has been fun and very eventful. Enterprise is a great subject which enhances learning and deepens understanding. I would strongly recommend this subject I you like this type of thing. I hope this may help with subject selection in the future :)
